Setting the Stagedecacdanc.gif (8989 bytes) (Free and Informative Information!)

Hosting a Texas barbecue can be as downright fun for you as it is for your guests. Let your imagination run wild as you forgo the fancy flatware for a more finger-lickin’ down-home approach.

Encourage your guests to dress the part, too. Whether it’s a pair of faded blue jeans or head-to-spur fringe, it’ll keep them in a Texas state of mind (not to mention the pictures will be priceless). We’ve rustled up some more fun tips for you to try:

Wild West invites. Create a first and lasting impression with invitations that set the tone for the festivities to come.
For example, nothing says Wild West like a “wanted” poster. Be sure to include the date and times (“high noon until the cows come home”), your guest’s name and the “crime” they’re wanted for—keep it lighthearted with something like “eats barbecue without a napkin”! Heavy black lettering on singed parchment creates an authentic effect. Roll and tie the poster with a colorful bandana or rope, and consider having a costumed sheriff hand deliver it.

Desperado decor. It’s easy to transform any backyard into a tumbleweed-strewn dust bowl with a little imagination. Begin by spreading straw on your deck or patio. Put out hay bales for your guests to sit on. Cast-iron cookware, a dinner bell, cowboy boots, saddles, horseshoes, bedrolls, wagon wheels, dried chili peppers, rope, Texas flags…even a steer skull can help set the mood.

And since a Texas barbecue wouldn’t be complete without a little county music, don’t forget some toe-tapping tunes for your guests to two-step to. Go for Texas-born country artists like Willie Nelson, George Jones, Tanya Tucker and Gene Autry.

Gussy up your table. Make your patio or picnic table festive with a red-checked or denim tablecloth. Colorful bandanas tied with rope or secured with a metal sheriff’s star work great as napkins. Paint your guests’ names on harmonicas and use them as place cards. They can take them home as a keepsake, too.

Prickly cactus in a colorful clay pots make a wonderful centerpiece, as does a pair of old boots. Just hide a vase inside and fill with fresh flowers.

Bottled hot sauces can also spice up your table setting. Put out a variety, along with some tortilla chips, so adventurous guests can try them all.

And, if the budget allows, look for fun-loving kitschy trinkets like cactus-shaped salt and pepper shakers or corncob candlesticks. And chill your drinks in a small old-time washtub filled with ice.

Lasso in the Fun   cowgirlassoo.gif (10934 bytes)

Texans know how to have a good time. Follow suit and keep your party as exciting as an 8-second bull ride with Western-inspired games and entertainment. From good old-fashioned horseshoes to cowboy boot pinatas, there are plenty of memories to be made.

Try these on for size:

Line-dance lesson. Invite your guests to go boot-scootin’. Whether barefoot on the lawn or in their favorite pair of cowboy boots, they’ll have a blast when you treat them to a line-dancing lesson. Hire an instructor or lead the way yourself. It’s a great icebreaker for partygoers who might not know each other.

Texas hold ’em. Guests who have two left feet might enjoy a friendly game of Texas hold ’em poker at a picnic table instead. Two to 10 players can join the fun. The objective is to finish with the best poker hand and ultimately win the pot. It’s fun…it’s fast…and it takes the courage of a rodeo cowboy to play.

Cattle corral. Show little cowpokes the fun of steer roping. (Just promise you won’t tie up the family dog). Instead, attach a fake steer head, or something similar, to a bale of hay. Fashion a lasso, position the pint-sized wranglers a few feet away and let them take turns trying to “catch” cattle.

Squirt-gun showdown. Hone your guests’ shootin’ skills by lining a deck rail with lit candles or empty soda cans. Give each gunslinger a water pistol and see who can either quench the flame or knock the can off first.

And just because the sun sets doesn’t mean the fun has to end. Texas campfires are legendary with cowboys. Pull out those harmonicas, or be sure to invite someone who knows how to strum a song on a six string, to boot.
